Carl-Gustaf M4

This is a milestone in Saab’s progress towards the establishment of a new manufacturing facility in India which will produce the latest generation of the Carl-Gustaf shoulder-launched weapon. Saab will be partnering with Indian sub-suppliers and the systems manufactured at the facility will fully meet the requirements of “Make in India”.

“It is a great honour to be trusted as a global defence company to receive approval for 100% foreign direct investment in India. This underlines our strong commitment to Make in India and our excellent collaboration with the Indian Defence Forces”, says Görgen Johansson, head of Saab’s business area Dynamics.

Saab’s Carl-Gustaf system has been in service with the Indian Army since 1976 and is established as the main shoulder launched weapon in the Indian Armed Forces.

Satellite with Saab technology launched by SpaceX

20231113-en-4678818-1.jpg

Ymir-1 is a test satellite and part of the development of the next generation of the Automatic Identification System (AIS), a system used by ships to communicate position, speed, course, and other data. AIS is a requirement for all larger ships and boats in civilian traffic. Saab TransponderTech is a leading manufacturer of AIS transponders and has built the advanced transponder onboard the satellite.

“Saab's focus is innovation and to be at the forefront of technology. By using the space domain, we can strengthen and improve already existing products in our portfolio. The satellite launch is an important step in our investment in space and demonstrates our ability to utilise available Saab technology to, together with our partners, create new, unique space applications,” says Christian Hedelin, Chief Strategy Officer at Saab.

Due to the increasing number of ships at sea, AIS will be upgraded to a new technology known as VDES (VHF Data Exchange System). With VDES, capacity will significantly increase, and there will be the possibility of secure two-way communication via satellites, providing global coverage compared to today's systems which are limited to coastal communication.

In the long run, the new navigation and communication system, VDES, will link land, sea, air, and space by combining advanced transponders with modern software and satellites.

The Swedish-built satellite Ymir-1 is a tool for research and development, developed in collaboration between Saab, AAC Clyde Space, and ORBCOMM within the AOS consortium. The project will continue throughout 2024.

Saab and MBDA to strengthen co-operation

Sweden and France have expressed their desire to strengthen their defence co-operation under a new strategic partnership signed on 30 January as part of French President Emmanuel Macron's state visit to Sweden. Anti-tank and air defence have been identified as priority areas for co-operation.

In this context, a major new step has been taken in the relationship between the two countries. On 31 January, Micael Johansson and Eric Béranger, the CEOs of Saab and MBDA, expressed their willingness to support this process in the fields of anti-tank and air defence, two capabilities identified as particularly critical for the armed forces of both countries, especially in the context of high-intensity conflicts. They signed Letters of Intent to strengthen the co-operation between their companies in these two fields, at the Business Forum organised in the presence of the highest French and Swedish authorities.

“The closeness between Saab and MBDA is reflected in our co-operation over many years, and the deepening and broadening of that through these Letters of Intent is most welcome. Doing this here in Stockholm during the state visit by President Macron to Sweden is symbolic of how two European governments working together can facilitate industry in strengthening our collective security,” said Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab.

Eric Béranger CEO of MBDA, said: “This is an exciting new step in our long-standing partnership with Saab. We are both world leaders in the anti-tank and air defence domains and we will be combining our expertise to deliver the best capabilities for the armed forces on the battlefield. The signature of these Letters of Intent is further proof that co-operation lies at the very heart of MBDA’s values.”

Co-operation in the anti-tank field has resulted in an initial focus on the AKERON MP. A first contract has been awarded to Saab and MBDA by the DGA, the French contracting entity, and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV - Försvarets Materielverk). This will enable the pooling of Saab and MBDA’s expertise in the anti-tank domain, in order to support the Swedish and French armed forces' choice of the AKERON MP weapon system in the short term. This will also enable the implementation of a joint capability roadmap to develop new functionalities associated in particular with beyond line-of-sight firing, and also to prepare the missile to address the future generation of targets that will arrive on the battlefield. This roadmap will maintain AKERON MP's position as the benchmark weapon in its field, and an indispensable tool in high-intensity conflicts.

Saab and MBDA are long-standing partners, as illustrated by their co-operation on the Meteor air-to-air missile programme and the TAURUS cruise missile, as well as in the European MARSEUS consortium that aims to provide a sovereign European beyond line-of-sight missile firing capability.

Saab has received an order from Airbus Defence and Space for the Arexis Electronic Warfare (EW) sensor suite. The contract period is 2024-2026.

20240326-en-4782652-1.jpg

The German defence procurement office announced in June 2023 that it had selected Saab’s Arexis sensor suite for the Eurofighter EK, an EW variant of the German Air Force’s Eurofighter aircraft. This order marks the start of the first phase of Saab’s delivery of Arexis within this programme.

Saab received the order from Airbus, which will equip 15 of the German Air Force’s Eurofighters for EW missions with solutions including Saab’s Arexis. These aircraft will replace the German Air Force’s Tornado ECR, which are set to be decommissioned from 2030.

"Our solid experience of developing electronic warfare systems for airborne platforms and our long-standing cooperation with Airbus will be crucial to support the delivery of the Eurofighter EK to the German Air Force. Combining advanced hardware and AI-enabled software, our Arexis sensor suite will strengthen the German defence with future-proof electronic warfare capability for decades to come," says Micael Johansson, CEO and President of Saab.

Saab will be supported by its strategic AI partner Helsing and the Arexis suite will feature Helsing’s AI platform. Arexis enables the user to detect, locate and identify radar emitters in complex and congested electromagnetic environments.
